Aaron & Brego
do stuff

This is Brego — a miniature long-haired dachshund of unusual focus. Every pin below is a documented adventure, plotted from the photographs themselves. Tap a pin for the evidence; tap the evidence for the full record.

Plates made inside the den are omitted from the map. A dog’s home is his own business.

We Meet

Puppy Brego in a blue harness asleep on a yellow rug, head resting against a white sneaker

He is roughly the size of a loaf of bread, with the confidence of a much larger loaf. The training begins immediately. So do the naps, wherever the naps find him.

The Curriculum

Close-up of puppy Brego mid-trot on the sidewalk, one ear flipped, paw blurred with motion

Daily walks become the standing appointment. Classes begin. He learns sit, stay, down — and roughly forty other things nobody asked him to learn, filed away for later.

August 2022 — The Lake

The Expeditions Begin

Young Brego sniffing the boards of a lake dock in golden morning light, mountains across the water

First lake. First dock, inspected board by board. Meanwhile the names accrue: Mr. B. Big Guy. Sir. Bud. He answers to all of them, when it suits him. His family and I become friends; I become part of the operation.

The years since

The Public Takes Notice

Strangers begin declaring him the most attractive thing they have ever seen — regularly, unprompted, without exaggeration. I adopt a policy of acting bored about it. He adopts a policy of agreeing with them.

Present day — age 4.4

The Stare, Final Form

Attentive. Calm. Serious. Smarter than he lets on. We trained for this his entire life — and somewhere along the way he became my best friend, and I became his.

A note on the name: Brego was a horse of Rohan — steed of kings, bearer of Aragorn, famously good judgment. This Brego is eight inches tall. The judgment holds.
